Staph Infection Treatment And Medication
Staph infections are very common. In the beginning they were treated with common antibiotics. The drugs were very efficient and they saved many lives but as time passed, the bacteria became resistant to drugs. The older ways and medicines were not effective anymore and the bacteria could now resist the penicillin antibiotic. This is what happens when a bacteria is exposed to the same drug for 10 years – it develops resistance. This is how new antibiotics appeared. Doctors developed dicloaxcillin and methicillin. They became the most commonly used antibiotics to treat the infection with staph but just like the use of penicillin, the bacteria became resistant to these ones as well. They had to develop new treatments to help people. They had to develop more potent and more aggressive methods and one of them was the vancomycin. For a while this was very efficient as this drug helps with the treatment where the common antibiotics do not work anymore. They usually use it in cases of Methicillin Resistant Staphyllococcal Aureus (MRSA).
After a few years some strings of staph developed a resistance to this one as well thanks to the repeated exposure. There were 3 cases of Vancomycin Resistant Staphyllococcal Aureus in 2005 and 5 in 2007. The number will continue to grow, over the years, as the bacteria learns to adapt. The doctors have to continuously find new and more efficient ways to counteract the effects of the bacteria. And every day new strings of the staph infections appear and they are getting more and more aggressive. On different continents the strings are mutating differently and the doctors have to fight a lot to counteract their effects. It is a continuous battle every day with these simple but hard to treat infections and new treatments are discovered and promoted every day in many countries around the world.
